The Vatican is revealing fresh information on Pope Francis's last hours before his stroke early on Monday, April 21.
The church said among his last words in the day before death "thank you."
According to the Vatican's news service, Francis, 88, told Massimiliano Strappetti, a nurse the pope has stated "once saved his life by suggesting colon surgery," his longtime health aide.
As Francis chose to make a surprise visit in the so-called popemobile, touring among tens of thousands of worshippers outside St. Peter's Basilica for Easter Sunday, Strappetti also offered his support, delivering an annual blessing.

The burial of popes involves unique traditions that reflect centuries of history and symbolism, including using three coffins to honor their legacy. Here are answers to five common questions about papal burials.
What happens to the pope’s body when he dies?
After a pope’s death, the Catholic Church enters sede vacante, meaning “the seat being vacant.” This period, which marks the transition between popes, includes a series of steps, directed by the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, outlining papal funeral rites. According to the Catholic News Agency, the 2024 edition of the official liturgical book states that after the death of a pope, the body is examined and preserved so public viewing can be carried out with the “greatest decorum and respect.”
The pope’s remains, dressed in a white cassock (symbolizing purity), are moved to the private papal chapel where the camerlengo, or chief cardinal, oversees the death certification rite and deposition in a coffin. The pontiff's body, adorned in red vestments (representing the passion and blood of Christ) with a mitre and pallium (scarf-like accessory), is placed in a zinc-lined coffin for visitation and prayer at the Vatican.
The body typically lies in state for three days, followed by a nine-day ancient mourning tradition called Novendiales.

Why three coffins instead of one?
Traditionally, a pope’s burial included three nested coffins, each with its own materials, purpose and symbolism, according to Vatican News. The inner cypress coffin, symbolizing humility, holds the pope’s body and personal items. The middle coffin, made of lead, preserves the body and secures important documents. And the outer coffin, crafted of elm or oak, ensures durability, symbolizes strength and honors the pope’s dignity.Has this always been the tradition?
In her book The Deaths of the Popes, papal historian Wendy J. Reardon writes that the tradition of using three coffins dates back to the 14th century, and continued through Pope Benedict XVI’s funeral in 2023. In 2024, Pope Francis simplified funeral rites in the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis, opting for a single zinc-lined wood coffin.
What else is placed in the coffin?
According to Reardon, the inner coffin traditionally includes coins minted during the pope’s reign and a rogito–a history of his key acts–written on parchment paper and placed in a brass or metal tube. Along with a death certificate, other symbolic items—including the pope’s miter, pastoral staff, broken ring and rosary—are also placed in the inner coffin.
Where are popes buried?
Most popes–more than 90, including John Paul II and Pius XII–are buried in the Vatican grottoes under St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. However, some are buried in other Roman churches, including Pope Francis, who requested to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, the resting place of seven other popes. He is the first pope since Leo XIII in 1903 not to be buried in the Vatican. Around 30 popes are buried outside of Rome, including six in France when the papacy moved to Avignon between 1309 and 1377.

For centuries, the leader of the Catholic Church has been chosen in a highly secretive gathering known as “conclave,” meaning “with key” in Latin – a nod to how cardinals used to be locked in until a new pope was selected. Cardinals tasked with picking the next pontiff follow an elaborate process with roots in the Middle Ages.
The rituals as we know them today have been subsequently revised by successive popes. The bulk of the modern rulebook that cardinals follow was overhauled by John Paul II in the 1996 Apostolic constitution known as “Universi Dominici Gregis,” with a few further adjustments by Benedict XVI.
Once the date is set, the cardinal electors head to the home of conclave – the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. A candidate needs two-thirds of the votes cast to be elected. From solemn oaths to intricate voting procedures and the famed white smoke, here’s how the centuries-old process unfolds.

While many cardinals live and work at the Vatican, most are spread across the world and are required to head to Rome “unless they are hindered by sickness or by some other grave impediment.”
The cardinals do not walk on the
floor, but instead on a raised wooden
platform covered in beige cloth to
protect the mosaic marble beneath.
As many as four votes a day can take place (two in the
morning and two in the afternoon) for the first four days of
conclave. On the fifth day, voting is suspended to allow time
for prayer, quiet reflection and informal discussion.
Voting resumes no more than a day later and continues for
another seven rounds before another break. If the stalemate
continues, cardinals can choose to vote between the two
leading candidates in the ballot immediately preceding; only
an absolute majority is then needed.
Shortly after, the new pope steps onto the balcony, framed by red curtains, and delivers his first apostolic blessing, known as the “Urbi et Orbi” (“To the City and to the World”).
This brings the intricate process of conclave to an end. The days ahead will see the new pontiff attend his inauguration Mass, which usually takes place at St. Peter’s Basilica, before assuming his duties as the head of the Catholic Church.

When the captain and the court officers had brought the apostles in
and made them stand before the Sanhedrin,

to stop teaching in that name?
Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching
and want to bring this man's blood upon us."
But Peter and the apostles said in reply,
"We must obey God rather than men.
The God of our ancestors raised Jesus,
though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree.
God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior
to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins.
We are witnesses of these things,
as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him."
The Sanhedrin ordered the apostles
to stop speaking in the name of Jesus, and dismissed them.
So they left the presence of the Sanhedrin,
rejoicing that they had been found worthy
to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.

Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing."
They said to him, "We also will come with you."
So they went out and got into the boat,
but that night they caught nothing.
When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore;
but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to them, "Children, have you caught anything to eat?"
They answered him, "No."
So he said to them, "Cast the net over the right side of the boat
and you will find something."
So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in
because of the number of fish.
So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord."
When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord,
he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad,
and jumped into the sea.
The other disciples came in the boat,
for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards,
dragging the net with the fish.
When they climbed out on shore,
they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread.
Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you just caught."
So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore
full of one hundred fifty-three large fish.
Even though there were so many, the net was not torn.
Jesus said to them, "Come, have breakfast."
And none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?"
because they realized it was the Lord.
Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them,
and in like manner the fish.
This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples
after being raised from the dead.
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to Simon Peter a second time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep."
Jesus said to him the third time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time,
"Do you love me?" and he said to him,
"Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you."
Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger,
you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted;
but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands,
and someone else will dress you
and lead you where you do not want to go."
He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God.
And when he had said this, he said to him, "Follow me."

Simon Phêrô bảo: “Tôi đi đánh cá đây”. Các ông kia nói rằng: “Chúng tôi cùng đi với ông”. Mọi người ra đi xuống thuyền. Nhưng đêm ấy các ông không bắt được con cá nào. Lúc rạng đông, Chúa Giêsu hiện đến trên bờ biển, nhưng các môn đệ không biết là Chúa Giêsu. Người liền hỏi: “Này các con, có gì ăn không?” Họ đồng thanh đáp: “Thưa không”. Lưới đầy toàn cá lớn; tất cả được một trăm năm mươi ba con. Dầu cá nhiều đến thế, nhưng lưới không rách. Chúa Giêsu bảo rằng: “Các con hãy lại ăn”. Không ai trong đám ngồi ăn dám hỏi “Ông là ai?”, vì mọi người đã biết là Chúa. Chúa Giêsu lại gần, lấy bánh trao cho các môn đệ; Người cũng cho cá như thế. Ðây là lần thứ ba, Chúa Giêsu đã hiện ra với các môn đệ khi Người từ cõi chết sống lại.
Vậy khi các Ngài đã điểm tâm xong, Chúa Giêsu hỏi Simon Phêrô rằng: “Simon, con ông Gioan, con có yêu mến Thầy hơn những người này không?” Ông đáp: “Thưa Thầy: Có, Thầy biết con yêu mến Thầy”. Người bảo ông: “Con hãy chăn dắt các chiên con của Thầy”. Người lại hỏi: “Simon, con ông Gioan, con có yêu mến Thầy không?” Ông đáp: “Thưa Thầy: Có, Thầy biết con yêu mến Thầy”. Many signs and wonders were done among the people
at the hands of the apostles.
They were all together in Solomon’s portico.
None of the others dared to join them, but the people esteemed them.
Yet more than ever, believers in the Lord,
great numbers of men and women, were added to them.
Thus they even carried the sick out into the streets
and laid them on cots and mats
so that when Peter came by,
at least his shadow might fall on one or another of them.
A large number of people from the towns
in the vicinity of Jerusalem also gathered,
bringing the sick and those disturbed by unclean spirits,
and they were all cured.
The word of the Lord.

“Số người tin vào Chúa ngày càng gia tăng”.
Trích sách Tông đồ Công vụ.
Khi ấy, các Tông đồ làm nhiều phép lạ và nhiều việc phi thường trong dân, và tất cả mọi người tập họp tại hành lang Salômôn; nhưng không một ai khác dám nhập bọn với các tông đồ. Nhưng dân chúng đều ca tụng các ngài. Số những người nam nữ tin vào Chúa ngày càng gia tăng, đến nỗi họ mang bệnh nhân ra đường phố, đặt lên giường chõng, để khi Phêrô đi ngang qua, ít nữa là bóng của người ngả trên ai trong họ, thì kẻ ấy khỏi bệnh. Ðông đảo dân chúng ở những thành phụ cận Giêrusalem cũng tuôn đến, mang theo bệnh nhân và những người bị quỷ ám. Mọi người đều được chữa lành.
Ðó là lời Chúa.

I, John, your brother, who share with you
the distress, the kingdom, and the endurance we have in Jesus,
found myself on the island called Patmos
because I proclaimed God’s word and gave testimony to Jesus.
I was caught up in spirit on the Lord’s day
and heard behind me a voice as loud as a trumpet, which said,
“Write on a scroll what you see.”
Then I turned to see whose voice it was that spoke to me,
and when I turned, I saw seven gold lampstands
and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man,
wearing an ankle-length robe, with a gold sash around his chest.
When I caught sight of him, I fell down at his feet as though dead.
He touched me with his right hand and said, “Do not be afraid.
I am the first and the last, the one who lives.
Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever.
I hold the keys to death and the netherworld.
Write down, therefore, what you have seen,
and what is happening, and what will happen afterwards.”

Gospel (John 20:19-31)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint John
On the evening of that first day of the week,
when the doors were locked, where the disciples were,
for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst
and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,
“Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained.”
Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve,
was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”
But he said to them,
“Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands
and put my finger into the nailmarks
and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
Now a week later his disciples were again inside
and Thomas was with them.
Jesus came, although the doors were locked,
and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands,
and bring your hand and put it into my side,
and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”
Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples
that are not written in this book.
But these are written that you may come to believe
that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,
and that through this belief you may have life in his name.
The Gospel of the Lord.

“Tám ngày sau Chúa Giêsu hiện đến”.
Tin Mừng Chúa Giêsu Kitô theo Thánh Gioan.
Vào buổi chiều ngày thứ nhất trong tuần, những cửa nhà các môn đệ họp đều đóng kín, vì sợ người Do-thái, Chúa Giêsu hiện đến, đứng giữa các ông và nói rằng: “Bình an cho các con”. Khi nói điều đó, Người cho các ông xem tay và cạnh sườn Người. Bấy giờ các môn đệ vui mừng vì xem thấy Chúa. Chúa Giêsu lại phán bảo các ông rằng: “Bình an cho các con. Như Cha đã sai Thầy, Thầy cũng sai các con”. Nói thế rồi, Người thổi hơi và phán bảo các ông: “Các con hãy nhận lấy Thánh Thần, các con tha tội ai, thì tội người ấy được tha. Các con cầm tội ai, thì tội người ấy bị cầm lại”. Bấy giờ trong Mười hai Tông đồ, có ông Tôma gọi là Ðiđymô, không cùng ở với các ông khi Chúa Giêsu hiện đến. Các môn đệ khác đã nói với ông rằng: “Chúng tôi đã xem thấy Chúa”. Nhưng ông đã nói với các ông kia rằng: “Nếu tôi không nhìn thấy vết đinh ở tay Người, nếu tôi không thọc ngón tay vào lỗ đinh, nếu tôi không thọc bàn tay vào cạnh sườn Người, thì tôi không tin”.
Tám ngày sau, các môn đệ lại họp nhau trong nhà và có Tôma ở với các ông. Trong khi các cửa vẫn đóng kín, Chúa Giêsu hiện đến đứng giữa mà phán: “Bình an cho các con”. Ðoạn Người nói với Tôma: “Hãy xỏ ngón tay con vào đây, và hãy xem tay Thầy; hãy đưa bàn tay con ra và xỏ vào cạnh sườn Thầy; chớ cứng lòng, nhưng hãy tin”. Tôma thưa rằng: “Lạy Chúa con, lạy Thiên Chúa của con!” Chúa Giêsu nói với ông: “Tôma, vì con đã xem thấy Thầy, nên con đã tin. Phúc cho những ai đã không thấy mà tin!”
Chúa Giêsu còn làm nhiều phép lạ khác trước mặt các môn đệ, và không có ghi chép trong sách này. Nhưng các điều này đã được ghi chép để anh em tin rằng Chúa Giêsu là Ðấng Kitô, Con Thiên Chúa, và để anh em tin mà được sống nhờ danh Người.
Ðó là lời Chúa.
